Direct-connect headsets are still the best solution for areas with high radio-frequency interference. They are powered by the connected device and don’t need a battery charger. Choose binaural (dual ear) or monaural (single ear) depending on noise environment and user preference.
The Plantronics Blackwire 5200 series have USB-A, USB-C, or 3.5mm connector plugs. The EncorePro series and SupraPlus models are also popular wired models and are used on many Motorola dispatch consoles.
Plantronics Wireless Bluetooth Headset Choices
Wireless Bluetooth headsets are the most popular for mobile workers. They easily connect to smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers. The Plantronics Voyager 5200 UC has superior noise-cancellation and advanced sensor technology. Conference calls, webinars, and important conversations can be taken in the vehicle or on the move.
Plantronics offers headsets with a BT300 Class 2 Bluetooth adapter (up to 30 ft range) and a BT600 Class 1 adapter with up to 98 ft range. Other popular Bluetooth models include Legend UC, Legend CS, Focus UC, M70, and Marque 2.
Bluetooth frequencies share the same band as WiFi so interference could cause problems if operating close to an access point.
Wireless DECT 6.0 Headsets for Maximum Distance from Deskphone
The recommended Plantronics wireless headsets for use in facilities with dense WiFi and strong interference are the Savi 700 series, Savi 440, or CS520. They utilize DECT 6.0 frequencies that don’t interfere with WiFi. DECT 6.0 also provides better range than Bluetooth by allowing you to roam up to 350 feet from the base/charger. The Savi 700 and 400 series also have Bluetooth for easy connectivity to a computer.

Hazardous locations are found in many industries including refineries, fuel storage facilities, plastics processing plants, chemical plants, and grain elevators. Contractors, subcontractors, and anyone working a HazLoc job can now rent, lease-purchase, or buy their radios.
Our rental radio packages include two Motorola UL-Approved PMNN4490 intrinsically-safe batteries, Motorola PMMN4071 UL-Approved remote speaker-microphone, and XPR 3500e hand-held radios UL-Approved to TIA-4950 for use in Hazardous Locations, Division 1, Class I, II, III, Groups C,D,E, F, G; Division 2, Class 1, Groups A,B,C,D,T3C. Tamb = -25°C to +60 °C. We include a Motorola IMPRES charger that automatically conditions the batteries for peak performance. Our rental radio is also capable of operating on a Motorola Capacity Plus trunking system if needed.
The XPR 3500e can handle up to 128 channels and includes a 2-line display for easier operation. Our optional channel announcement feature allows the user to hear the actual channel names without having to look at the display. Motorola Entry-Tier Commercial Portfolio Expands With Select Vertex Models
Motorola Solutions will retire the Vertex Standard brand this month. The digital eVerge EVX-261, EVX-S24, analog VX-260 series, VX-450 series, VX-2100, and VX-2200 will be rebranded with the Motorola logo. The eVerge DMR EVX-261 and EVX-S24 are compatible with all Motorola MOTOTRBO digital radios. The last day we can place new orders for Vertex branded equipment is 12/31/17.

Bluetooth Accessories Require Latest Firmware for Best Performance
Motorola wireless accessories use a pod with APX, XTS, XPR, and SL 7000 series radios. The pod can be used as a stand-alone wireless push-to-talk (PTT) or power a surveillance kit, earbud, and also connect with the completely discreet earpiece. The pod has internal firmware that can be updated by the user to take advantage of the latest software release from Motorola.
The NTN2571 mission-critical secure pod includes encryption for APX and XTS models and the NNTN8127 operations-critical pod is designed for MOTOTRBO DMR XPR and SL 7000 radios. Each pod as unique firmware that should be upgraded for improved battery life and performance.

Motorola Solutions provides a Windows application to upgrade their wireless bluetooth accessories. The Accessory Programming Software tool is a free download and supports both pods. OTTO, a high-quality 2-way radio accessory manufacturer from Carpentersville, IL recently introduced a high-temperature purpose-built shoulder microphone for the fire service. The OTTO 500 is designed to function in 500 degree heat for 5 minutes and also fully-submerged underwater for a half hour.
The OTTO 500 is available for most radio models including Motorola, Harris, Kenwood, Icom, and EFJ. A removable grill makes it easy to clean and has a replaceable debris screen. The PTT is easy to use when wearing gloves and most models have an emergency button. The OTTO 500 has a 3 year warranty and is a good choice for extreme fireground operations.
Monitor Any 2-Way Radio or Remote Speaker-Mic with 3.5mm Jack
3M Peltor is now shipping an improved TEP-200 tactical electronic earplug designed for the military, SWAT teams, and law enforcement. Level dependent technology instantly provides hearing protection for harmful noises and also increases low sounds during quiet periods.
The earpieces now have tiny antennas that allow audio to be received wirelessly using an optional neckloop. The TEP-LOOP-200 plugs into the 3.5mm jack on the remote speaker-microphone or any other audio source. The TEP-200 earplugs are receive-only. To transmit, the user would press the push-to-talk button and speak into the microphone. The TEP-200 is rated IP67 for submersibility and lasts up to 16 hours of continuous operation.
Ultrafit 23 dB NRR and 27 dB NRR Triple-C communications eartips are included. Optional 30 dB 370-1019-10 Skull Screw eartips are available for extreme noise hearing protection.
3M also introduced the LEP-200 designed for construction and industrial workers. Although it lacks the IP67 rugged rating, it offers the same functionality as the TEP-200. The original TEP-100 without wireless connectivity is also still available.

The SL3500e works with MOTOTRBO conventional, IP Site Connect and Capacity Plus (single and multi-site) systems. It is a VHF or UHF entry-level professional series radio and includes a 24 month warranty.
At only 6.7 ounces it provides up to 13.5 hours of battery life. The SL3500e has a 2-line OLED display that will provide channel info, battery life, and signal strength. Wired accessories use the same audio connector as the SL300. Wireless Bluetooth audio accessories are available too. The SL3500e also has built-in WiFi for remote programming.
Level Dependent Hearing Protection Up to 28dB NRR, Digital, and Bluetooth
3M announced a new WS LiteCom Pro III headset with a built-in analog and DMR digital programmable two-way communication radio, level-dependent hearing protection, Bluetooth functionality, and a jack to connect external devices. The headset will provide up to 11 hours of typical use with the included battery and charger.

You may have heard excessive speeding can reduce fuel economy but few of us know how much it costs. We found some useful information compiled from DOE data.
Your vehicle’s fuel mileage decreases once it exceeds optimal speed. For most vehicles, this is happens at about 55 mph. Every time you go over this speed, you’re wasting fuel and money. A slight decrease in your highway driving speed can significantly reduce your fuel consumption.
Impact on Fleet Fuel Efficiency When Exceeding 55 MPH per DOE
According to studies backed by the DOE, the average fleet vehicle will be at its advertised peak efficiency MPG at 55 mph. As speed increases you can lose up to 28% of fuel efficiency when traveling at highway speeds.
The impact for every 5 mph increase is shown below:
3% less efficient at 60 mph
8% less efficient at 65 mph
17% less efficient at 70 mph
23% less efficient at 75 mph
28% less efficient at 80 mph
Magnum AVL Speed Reporting and Alerts Provide Driver Coaching
Our Magnum AVL GPS fleet management system has two types of speed alerts. The first is a high speed alert. Set the threshold at, for example, 70 mph and if a driver exceeds that threshold you can be notified (or get a daily report of all violations).
The second alert is “posted speed” alert. Set this alert to be triggered if a driver exceeds 12 mph over ANY posted speed limit on any road. Alerts can be sent to your email or phone but you may want to have a daily or weekly report sent to you showing all violations with exact time and location.
Here are short videos explaining how to setup alerts and reports to coach your drivers. Provide recognition to those with the least violations and watch your fuel bill drop next month.
