Motorola MOTOTRBO Essential Services & Free Wi-Fi Promo Extended Until 12/30

DMR High Tier Hand-held and Vehicle Radios

SL 7000, XPR 7000/3000, SL3500e, XPR 5000/2500 Series Affected

Motorola Solutions changed their MOTOTRBO software support policy for the professional tier radios earlier this year. Essential Services premium software features and standard depot repair warranty for new radios are now provided for five years. It is possible to opt out of the 5 year depot warranty and select 2 years for a small savings.

This change started with SL/XPR 7000 series, XPR 3000 series, SL3500e, XPR 2500, and XPR 5000 series with v2.9 firmware. Premium software features are now licensed for 5 years with a new radio or until any radio shipped prior to v2.9 is still under warranty. Older radios will not accept firmware updates after v2.8 without a licensing fee.

The CP200d, SL300, EVX-261, EVX-S24, CM200d, and CM300d DMR digital radio models are not affected by this change. They could be added in the future but so far it is not clear if it will ever happen.

List of Motorola MOTOTRBO Premium Software Features

Most premium software features were purchased a la carte in the past. The most popular are Bluetooth, Text-to-Speech, and Man-Down. Wi-Fi is not a premium feature and must be purchased separately. Below is a graphic showing the complete list of premium MOTOTRBO software features.

What Happens With Existing MOTOTRBO Radio Firmware?

Our standard practice for repairs and preventive maintenance includes upgrading every radio to the latest firmware. We are no longer able to go past v2.8 unless the radio is still under warranty. Starting with v2.10 radios will not accept the new firmware (and new features) unless a license was purchased for the serial number of the radio.

Essential Software Promo Provides FREE Wi-Fi License Until 12/30

Software Updates 3 YearsMotorola announced a promotion for customers with existing radios to purchase MOTOTRBO Essential Services before the end of December. As an added incentive a perpetual Wi-Fi license ($125 value) will be included for enhanced “e” models. This will allow WAVE OnCloud interoperability with TLK 100 radios in the near future.

This is a perfect time to send your radios to us for preventative maintenance. We will install the latest firmware, auto-tune your radio to factory specs, enable Wi-Fi if capable, and unlock a 3 year extension for future software releases. We will also archive your programming information. If you have the CPS programming application are able to perform your own updates we can provide a quote for the unlock codes only.

Consider Private LTE and CBRS Spectrum for On-Site Communications Instead of WiFI

Communications over WiFi has become more congested and less secure as IoT devices are added in manufacturing plants, hotels, and campus facilities. These high-bandwidth users who need a secure communications platform are turning to Private LTE using the Citizens Broadband Radio Service. CBRS (not to be confused with Citizens Band Radio) is new and located at 3.5 – 3.7 GHz. Users are not required to apply for a FCC license for their small cell location but will instead pay a monthly fee for spectrum allocation through a remote server.

Motorola recently released the MOTOTRBO Nitro product platform with access points and the purpose-built SLN 1000 hand-held voice radio using CBRS. We can design, install, and support this new business critical communications infrastructure. As an approved Avigilon Sales and Service Partner, we can also support your video surveillance needs. And…as a Cradlepoint Premier Partner we have the LTE network expertise and compatible CBRS LTE wireless routers.

We look forward to helping you deploy a Motorola MOTOTRBO Nitro communications system. For more information call our Dover, Delaware office at 302-734-9250 to discuss this new technology with your on-site requirements.

Motorola Technical Notification: APX/PCR RSM Cable Failures

APX XPR Shoulder Mic with coiled cordRemote speaker-microphones cables for APX P25 and XPR MOTOTRBO DMR series radios could experience jacket failures when stressed. A manufacturing change in jacket material caused the problem.

When the cord is stressed the cable could tear or fray and expose the internal wiring. As a result, RSM’s that show failures will be replaced for up to 24 months after purchase.

Symptoms and Root Cause of the Cord FailuresCoiled Cord small tear and fraying example

The cord failure is shown in the image. The failure typically occurs at the RSM head or radio connector end or both, but can also occur in cable middle section.

Front and back mic cable routingRadio users who prefer to route the mic cord behind their back and stress the cable are more likely to experience the problem. Motorola recommends to dress the coil section so it
does not get caught on uniform accessories for optimal RSM service life.

Motorola Remote Speaker-Microphone Models Affected

Motorola is upgrading the cable jacket material in the near future. RSM’s with the new cable will include an “L” in the model suffix when shipped.

Below are the RSM’s identified in the Motorola Technical Notification (MTN):

Motorola Wireless Microphone FAQ’s and LED Status Indicators

Motorola RLN6544 Wireless RSMThe Motorola wireless remote speaker-mic (WRSM) is a popular accessory for APX, XTL, and XPR series hand-held and vehicle mounted two-way radios.

Paired with portable radios it provides range about 30 feet and with the PMMN4097 mobile palm mic/gateway you can roam up to 300 feet from the vehicle. There is “mission critical” for APX and a “operations critical” software version for MOTOTRBO DMR radios.

Choose the Correct Wireless Mic for your Motorola Radio

Motorola’s model nomenclature and product tiering make it easy to purchase the wrong mic for your radio. Depending on the included charger bundle the product SKU changes slightly. Below is a summary of the configurations and their compatible radios.
