Motorola wireless accessories use a pod with APX, XTS, XPR, and SL 7000 series radios. The pod can be used as a stand-alone wireless push-to-talk (PTT) or power a surveillance kit, earbud, and also connect with the completely discreet earpiece. The pod has internal firmware that can be updated by the user to take advantage of the latest software release from Motorola.

The NTN2571 mission-critical secure pod includes encryption for APX and XTS models and the NNTN8127 operations-critical pod is designed for MOTOTRBO DMR XPR and SL 7000 radios. Each pod as unique firmware that should be upgraded for improved battery life and performance.

Instructions to Upgrade Firmware in Motorola Wireless Bluetooth Pods

Motorola Solutions provides a Windows application to upgrade their wireless bluetooth accessories. The Accessory Programming Software tool is a free download and supports both pods. The install guide includes easy step-by-step instructions with computer screenshots. In addition to the programming tool, you will also need to download the latest pod firmware.

Motorola APX XE vs. APX XE500 RSM Feature Comparison

Motorola’s IMPRES XE rugged remote speaker-microphone (RSM) choices for extreme environments are designed for firefighters with APX 6000XE, APX 7000XE, and APX 8000XE P25 radios. Available in black or high visibility green, they have a strobe light, orange emergency button, and clip with D-ring.

Motorola APX XE and APX XE500 Shared Features

Both the XE and XE-500 are rated IP68 for submersibility and carry an intrinsically-safe rating to match the APX radio certification. Both have a large volume toggle switch and are 50% louder than a XTS RSM. There is a reflective label on both styles for increased visibility. The APX XE was introduced about 5 years ago and is available in green (NNTN8575A) and black (NNTN8575ABLK).

New APX XE500 Feature ImprovementsXE500 Features and Controls

The XE500 started shipping last year with additional features. It has a channel knob and larger emergency button with embedded orange lighting. Noise suppression is improved and can pickup your voice when you can’t hear yourself talking. The heat resistant cable can withstand 500 degrees for 5 minutes without harm.

The XE500 is intrinsically safe rated for UL-TIA4950 but does not have a FM certification. If your department uses intrinsically-safe APX radios, check to determine if you need FM or UL certified accessories. They are not interchangeable.

The XE500 with channel knob is available in green (PMMN4106A) or black (PMMN4106ABLK). The XE500 is now available without a channel knob in high impact green (PMMN4107) and black (PMMN4107_BLK).

Zello, Wave Wireless Speaker-MicrophoneZello users who prefer a wireless speaker-microphone should choose the BTH-600-ZU. It is heavy-duty, IP56 rugged, built-in remote PTT, and includes a 3.5mm jack.

There is also a rotating clip, waterproof speaker, and operates up to 40 hours on a single charge. The noise-cancelling microphone coupled with a 3.5mm receive-only headset make it a good choice for loud environments.

There is also the new smaller and lighter BTH-550-ZU compact wireless RSM. It has aBluetooth Remote Speaker Mic for Zello, WAVE, ESChat rotary control volume knob, waterproof front-facing speaker, directional noise canceling microphone, heavy-duty belt clip, and 3.5mm audio jack.. Range is rated about 30 feet from the smart device.

This remote speaker-mic provides up to 40+ hours of operating time with the included USB rechargeable battery. The mic is easy to control with gloves on when working in the cold weather. The BTH-550 can be paired with either Android or Apple tablets or cellphones. The side button activates PTT function while the top button controls normal phone functions.

Wireless Accessories for AT&T KODIAK Enhanced Push-to-Talk AppEPTT wireless accessories

Low Cost Vertex EVX-S24 Digital Radio Now Shipping

Vertex Standard announced a new low cost DMR digital radio earlier this year with a display, Micro-USB charger, and 12 hour battery life. The UHF 403-470 MHz model in a black case has been released this month. The yellow case will start shipping in Q4.

Meets IP67 Submersible Rating With Analog/Digital Modes

DMR Display IP67 RadioIn addition to the 8-character alphanumeric display, the IP67 EVX-S24 is built to withstand 30 minutes under 3 feet of water. Up to 256 analog and digital channels can be programmed in the radio simultaneously.

The radio transmits 3 watts in digital mode and 2 watts in analog. It is compatible with any brand analog radio and other DMR digital radios.

The radio uses the FNB-V142LI 2300 mAh “cell phone” size battery making it one of the lightest radios at 7.6 oz. The radio is smaller with dimensions of 3.58 x 2.17 x 1.24 inches.

EVX-S24 Audio Accessories Require 3.5mm Threaded Plug

The EVX-S24 uses a 3.5mm threaded audio connector and new belt clip that are different from other Vertex radios. The programming software is new too and requires a CB000262A01 Micro USB cable. Our first impressions are this radio is feature rich at an entry-level price point. Schools, hotels, and now construction companies can migrate to a digital display radio for their on-site communications for under $300 per radio.
