While attending an IACP Conference a couple years ago, we found CTech Manufacturing a supplier of aluminum cabinets for the public-safety market. We were looking for a tactical storage cabinet that was lighter with better mounting options for our SUV upfits.

Lightweight Storage Cabinet For Police SUV UpfitWe like CTech’s CopBox and ChiefBox Tactical Cabinets designed for MID and FULL size SUV’s. There are 16 different standard sizes to choose from or you can design your own. The CopBox and ChiefBox have a QuickLink Mounting solution that make it possible to transfer the cabinet to a newer style vehicle in the future. You might have to replace the mounting plate depending on the model.

Red lightweight storage with whiteboard for SUVWe recently installed the red F47-351 ChiefBox for Little Creek Volunteer Fire Company’s new command vehicle as part of an upfit services project. The F47-351 has four drawers including a pull-out whiteboard and a compartment for SCBA’s, etc. Installation was quick and easier than a wood cabinet.

The CopBox and ChiefBox are significantly lighter than wood cabinets and their patented MotionLatch allows one-handed drawer opening. They also allow you to access the spare tire in some vehicles and CTech offers a lifetime warranty.

Motorola LEX L11 Rugged LTE Handheld Is FirstNet and FIPS 140 Certified

The LEX L11 is Motorola’s third generation purpose-built smartphone for public-safety Rugged LTE FirstNet Deviceprofessionals using AT&T FirstNet. The device has an IP68 submersibility rating and has Gorilla Glass 3 on the 5.0 inch display. A dedicated push-to-talk, emergency, and programmable buttons differentiate this from a consumer device. It also has dual front-facing speakers (107dB) and three microphones for noise suppression.

The LEX L11 is built with the Android 7.1 OS and has Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/k/r. The 3G/4G LTE radio is UMTS/GSM capable on bands 4, 5, 7, 12, 14, 17, 29, 30, 66 and is AT&T FirstNet certified. A Verizon compatible model is expected to be released in the first half of 2019.

Federal government users should know the LEX L11 is FIPS 140-2 Level 3 Validated.

LEX L11 Pairs With APX 6000/7000/8000 Mission Critical Bluetooth

The LEX pairs with APX 6000, APX 7000, and APX 8000 (including XE)  models with internal Bluetooth enabled. It provides remote control of APX radio’s zones, talk groups, and volume, emergency button activation, and allows you to speak directly into LEX L11 over the LMR radio network.

Replacement Batteries and Accessories for LEX L11

The IMPRES 2 PMNN4545 standard swappable battery has 2500 mAh capacity and lasts a typical 10 hour shift. The optional high-capacity PMNN4546 5000 mAh battery lasts up to 20 hours but requires the HN001155A01 replacement back cover.

The LEX has a 3.5mm jack and also supports wired audio accessories. The PMLN4541 2-wire surveillance kit with acoustic tube is the most popular for law enforcement. A lower cost PMLN4540 earbud with inline mic is also available.

Higher Capacity and Improved Cold Temperature PerformanceUL TIA 4950 Battery for APX 6000

Motorola recently started shipping a new intrinsically-safe TIA 4950 battery for the APX 8000H and APX 8000HXE HAZLOC radio models. The PMNN4547 battery provides 3100 mAh capacity using Li-ion cells and has an improves cold temperature specification. It has a IP68 rating which means it can survive in six feet of water for up to four hours. It also uses IMPRES 2 technology that provides up to 60% more charging cycles as compared to a standard battery.

Requires A New Carry Holder or Leather Case for APX 6000

APX 6000 Leather Case with Fixed Belt LoopThe new battery provides 16% more capacity than the 2,650 mAh NNTN8930 UL model.  Because the PMNN4547 is about 3mm deeper, APX 6000 and SRX 2200 users will need to upgrade their carrying accessories.

The PMLN7901 plastic carry holder is required to fit the new battery. If you are using the rugged APX 6000XE with larger knobs a PMLN7902 is the correct holster. There are also new APX 6000 leather cases with fixed or swivel belt loops available in our online store.

Series 9100 Headset and System Components

David Clark engineers designed a new rugged intercom headset system with the introduction of the Series 9100. The new digital architecture provides clear communications and single or multi-channel programming for any number of users.

System components include a variety of noise-cancelling headsets, master station, user gateways, and wireless belt stations. They are manufactured with marine grade parts and are watertight when possible. The 9100 headsets are not compatible with the older Series 9900 wireless intercom system.

Scalable System Provides 2-Way Radio Interface for Unlimited Users

Series 9100 Digital Headsets feature an integrated momentary PTT switch located atNoise-Cancelling Boom Mic with PTT Button the microphone bracket. The PTT switch is easy to find and convenient when you need to adjust the location of the noise-cancelling boom mic.

Headset NRR ratings are 23 decibels for the over-the-head style H9130 and behind-the-head style H9140.

The C91-20RD interface cable is used to interface a marine or mobile radio. The cable is unterminated at the radio end so that the installer can choose the correct connector.

Their standard cases are plain black full grain leather with silver hardware but almost anything is possible for custom orders.

It is important to know which battery you are using on your APX 8000, 7000, and 6000 because a longer case is need for the high-capacity batteries. There are also 3 different APX configurations available. This article provides choices for each Motorola APX model radio when used by fire, ems, or law enforcement professionals.

Motorola APX Battery Sizes For Boston Leather Cases

APX 8000, 7000 6000 Batteries

Motorola APX 8000, APX 8000XE, APX 6000, APX 6000XE Model 1.5P25 Firefighter Radio

Motorola APX 1.5 models only have a top display. The 5611RC15-1 holder is compatible with standard batteries and the 5611RCXB-1 is for extended length high-capacity batteries. There is also the original 5618RCNW-1 that was designed for the APX 6000 Model 1.5.

The 5481RC-1-E universal case is also a good choice if you want access to the top half of the radio.

Motorola APX 8000, APX 8000XE, APX 6000, APX 6000XE Model 2.5

APX6000XE Radio HolderThe model 2.5 has a top and side display with a limited keypad. The 5611RC-1 is designed for standard length batteries and has D-rings for a strap. The 5611-1 is the same case without the D-rings.

APX 6000/8000 Model 2.5 radios using extended batteries require the 5611RCXB25-1. If you prefer a radio holder that protects the side display choose the 5611RCNW-1. It has the sides open for larger audio connectors.

Motorola APX 8000, APX 8000XE, APX 6000, APX 6000XE Model 3.5APX 6000 with Full Keypad

The model 3.5 has a top and side display along with a full keypad. The 5611RC35-1 has a larger front cutout for access to the entire keypad and is compatible with standard size batteries. This case is also compatible with the SRX 2200 military radio.

Extended battery users should choose the 5611RCNW-1 no window holder.

Motorola APX 7000, APX 7000XE Boston Leather Radio Holder Choices

There are 3 Boston Leather radio holder choices for APX 7000 models.The standard holder for non-XE models with short batteries is the 5613RC-1. Rugged XE 1.5 models with standard batteries will need the 5612RC-1.

There is also a custom holder for the APX 7000 with an extended battery. The 5613RCXB-1 has cutouts and custom designed for the model 3.5 with full keypad and side display.

Boston Leather Radio Holders for Motorola APX 4000Radio, Mic, Leather Case

The 5701RC-1 is the recommended holder for the APX 4000. It includes cutouts for the display, full keypad, and microphone connector. This case can be worn on a duty belt and ordered without clips.

There is also a slightly different design 5701RCHW-1 with a high window.

Tubeless Listen-Only EarpieceEPC is now shipping the Micro Sound 1A tubeless receive-only earpiece for any remote speaker-mic with a 3.5mm audio jack. It uses a micro-speaker and eliminates the transducer and acoustic tube. Speaker audio is clearer over time as compared to a tube that accumulates dirt and moisture.
